On Wednesday deputies responded to a report of a stolen box truck from Richardson Welding and Fabrication on Brewer Hill Road in Batesville. According to the incident report, the owner had left the vehicle at the business on Friday, July 15. When the owner returned Wednesday, the vehicle was gone. The incident report stated that the box truck had been used to push the gate at the end of the driveway until the lock snapped off. The truck is described as a white 2000 GMC box truck (24-foot box). The truck has a winch on the back center area used to raise the back door. The driver’s side of the box truck has “For Sale” written with blue masking tape. The vehicle has been entered in the Arkansas Crime Information Center. The tag was AR C104894 and the vehicle identification number is 1GDK7H1C3YJ519864. It was valued at $10,000.

On Saturday, July 16, deputies with the Independence County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a stolen vehicle. An 85 year-old Batesville woman told deputies her grandson, a 45 year-old Texas man, had taken a battery out of a vehicle on the property and placed it in a black 2000 Chevy Silverado extended cab. The man also took fuel out of other vehicles on the property. The man had never been allowed to drive or use the vehicle at any time. Deputies were also advised the man had possibly removed copper wiring from inside an unoccupied trailer on the property. It is believed he was bound for Texas. The vehicle has been entered into the Arkansas Crime Information Center. The tag number of the stolen truck was AR 216175 and the vehicle identification number is 2GCEC19T55Y1403682 and was valued at $4,500.

A Booneville resident filed an auto theft report with the Independence County Sheriff Department. The woman deputies a man living on Newport Road in Batesville had paid to pull the engine out her camouflage, four-door, 1993 GMC Suburban in March. After a series of delays, the woman arrived in Batesville on Friday, July 15, to take the Suburban back, and the vehicle was gone. The man, who was only known to the woman as “Neil,” would not answer the woman’s calls or texts. The vehicle has been entered into the Arkansas Crime Information Center. The vehicle identification number is 1GkGK26K2PJ712029. The vehicle did not have tags, but does have a roof rack. It was valued at $5,000.

A Floral man wanted by U.S. Marshalls was taken into custody by the Independence County Sheriff Department this week. Deputies were patrolling on N. Central Avenue about 11:35 p.m. Wednesday when they observed a gold Mercury Mariner running by the Dollar General dumpster.

Deputies saw Phillip Ray Powell, 32, walk around from behind the vehicle. According to the incident report, Powell briefly turned around and tossed something behind him. Deputies ordered Powell to the ground and took him into custody. A small pocket knife was found in his waistband, and a small plastic baggie containing with a white crystalline substance weighing .85 grams, was found nearby on the pavement. Powell was charged with tampering with evidence of a felony investigation, and possession of meth or cocaine, less than two grams, both felonies.
